So now that the football's done, Eight Forty-Eight gave Bears legend Dent his due - and caught up on our other sports teams. Eight Forty-Eight's regular sports contributor Cheryl Raye-Stout shared the highs and lows of late.

Music Button: The Fireballs, "Bulldog", from the CD Rock Instrumental Classics Vol. 2-The 60's, (Rhino)

Wed, 09 Feb 2011 14:58:00 -0600 http://www.wbez.org/episode-segments/2011-02-09/chicago-hits-recent-sports-slump-82032 Daily Duel: Who's the biggest Chicago star at Harry Caray's? http://www.wbez.org/blog/daily-duel-whos-biggest-chicago-star-harry-carays

The new Harry Caray's restaurant is opening on Navy Pier this morning. There is a red carpet, live music, local djs and even people handing out energy drinks (you know you've made it as a restaurant if someone is handing out free energy drinks).‚ Stars include Ernie Banks, Richard Dent, James Denton, Jeremy Piven, Patrick Kane and others. Why would they all come out to a red carpet event at a Navy Pier restaurant opening? Because most of the stars own it. Yep, they are investors. That's sort of like Dan Akroyd showing up at House of Blues (back in the day).

So, instead of doing the daily duels of non-hall of fame Chicago sports stars today, we thought we would do a poll asking you who the most famous sports star is...today at Harry Caray's.
[poll id="83"]
Mon, 01 Mar 2010 11:27:00 -0600 http://www.wbez.org/blog/daily-duel-whos-biggest-chicago-star-harry-carays Poll: Who was the best non-hall of fame Chicago sports star? http://www.wbez.org/blog/poll-who-was-best-non-hall-fame-chicago-sports-star
In the wake of the news surrounding Richard Dent's rejection from the NFL Football Hall of Fame and the nomination for Scottie Pippen to the NBA Hall of Fame, we are going to get definitive. We all agree that MJ was the best Chicago sports figure of all time. But when you get past the obvious names, it gets harder to figure out who the best were. This weekend, I had a heated exchange about who was actually better: Dent v. Pippen. This heated argument led me to a new idea. Sure we can argue about who was better/worse among hall of fame-caliber players, but what about the non-hall of famers? Let the daily games begin. We will take two Chicago sports stars who aren't in their respective hall of fames and pit them against each other. We are going to do this Jeopardy!-style instead of a tournament or ranking. This gives us daily battles. We pit them against each other, you vote. The winner moves on to the next day. Our first match: Steve Kerr vs. Derrek Lee Steve Kerr - The 3-point shooting point-guard helped the Bulls win three championships with clutch shooting and strong all around play. He left Chicago to win championships in San Antonio, but we don't count that. This is just Chicago. Kerr never played in an NBA All-Star but did win the 3-point shoot-out in 1997. Derrek Lee - Lee has been the most productive Cub under coach Lou Pinella. Lee has shown spurts where he plays like a man possessed. Lee is a 2-time all-star and led the NL in batting average in 2005. But don't compare Richard Dent to Ron Santo. Dent has the goods. He is at the top of almost all applicable stat categories and he brings a Super Bowl XX MVP award to the table. Yet, he has been passed up this year, as the Hall went with Vikings' Defensive Tackle John Randle and Saints' Defensive End Ricky Jackson. So why is the 'Sackman' not getting in? Is it politics? Was Dent disliked by sportswriters? Or maybe, Dent didn't have big enough cheerleaders arguing for him. I talked with former NFL writer Don Pierson. Pierson covered the Bears for years for the Chicago Tribune and also served as the President of the Pro-Football Writers Association, which is the body that votes. I started the conversation by asking how the NFL Hall voting is different than other sports: pierson1 So why not Dent? Was he a jerk in the clubhouse? Did he have problems with the media? What is going against Richard Dent? pierson2 Another problem might be Dent's age. Many of the newer sports writers weren't around to watch him play. pierson3 But at the end of the day, are there Dent-haters out there? pierson4 It occurred to both of us at the end of the interview that this may very well be the last Chicago Bear to have a chance at the Hall of Fame. He mentioned Jay Hilgenberg and Jim Covert, but both of those players haven't come close to the final cut. After those names, the next two decades witnessed mediocre Chicago Bears' teams and players, none of which have a chance to make the NFL Hall of Fame (current players excluded).‚ Maybe Urlacher will turn a few more seasons into a Hall of Fame career, but did he have as big of an impact as Richard Dent? What do you think? Should Dent be in the Hall of Fame by now?
Thu, 11 Feb 2010 16:34:00 -0600 http://www.wbez.org/jkaufmann/2010/02/richard-dent-may-be-the-last-bear-with-a-legitimate-shot-at-the-hall-of-fame-present-players-excluded/14817 At least Scott Lee Cohen is following the IL Dem's game-plan: Give the ball to Madigan http://www.wbez.org/jkaufmann/2010/02/at-least-scott-lee-cohen-is-following-the-il-dems-game-plan-give-the-ball-to-madigan/14320
Top Story: So the counter-punch at the media is complete! Yesterday, I wrote if Scott Lee Cohen wanted to get back at the media for hijacking his political career, he should make the highly-anticipated withdrawal-from-the-race speech during the Super Bowl. So the political beat reporters would have to leave their nachos and skip their third beer to cover this sideshow. And he did it! He did exactly what I wrote. Now the question the peanut gallery has is whether or not I am psychic or if Scott Lee Cohen got the idea from me. So, either way, the press corps is probably pretty mad at me. Deal. B Story: Now this story gets so, so exciting. Does Pat Quinn get to pick a running-mate? Does Michael Madigan step in and make the call? Are voters who voted against the IL Democratic machine going to lose it now that the people they didn't want to make the decision are making the decision? I will give Scott Lee Cohen credit on one thing. He knows how the IL political game is played. The gameplan? Give the ball to Madigan. He's the Randy Moss of IL politics. C Story: So is your bus canceled today? At 4pm Friday, Daley met with CTA officials and union heads to stop the cuts. But nothing happened. Talks are continuing. And now your bus is gone. I know it's probably not the case, but didn't it just seem that back-in-the-day Daley would have come up with a way to stop the cuts and be the hero? Before the deadline? Add that to the fact that Daley brought out his troops for Terrence O'Brien in the Cook County Board race and you are starting to see a Mayor who is known for getting things done...not get things done. But then again, who is getting anything done anymore? Investigation: When the country of France kicks off the Tour De France, do they go national song, then national anthem like we do in the Super Bowl? Two songs to let the world know we love ourselves. Weather: Here comes the snow. Sports: How in the hell is Richard Dent not in the NFL Hall of Fame? This is why this town needs a Jay Mariotti. To stir this up. I'm sorry, but John Randle? John Randle is in the Hall before Dent? The sackman? To quote a family member: "Man, Dent must have pissed somebody off..." Kicker: I think this picture sums up the Cohen debacle. I hope it catches on. You can photo-shop the names of the players in...
Mon, 08 Feb 2010 06:15:00 -0600 http://www.wbez.org/jkaufmann/2010/02/at-least-scott-lee-cohen-is-following-the-il-dems-game-plan-give-the-ball-to-madigan/14320
