David Byrne gave Baca her first glimpse of international recognition, when he featured her interpretation of "Maria Lando" on the <em>Soul of Black Peru</em>, a compilation on the Luaka Bop label. In 2002, Baca won a Latin Grammy award for the album <em>Lamento Negro</em>.</p><p>She's now Peru’s minister of culture and the first black minister since independence from Spain.&nbsp; WBEZ contributor and <em>Latino Beat </em>host <a href="http://catalinamariajohnson.com/" target="_blank">Catalina Maria Johnson</a>, filling in for Tony Sarabia, tells us more about Baca and shares some of her top Afro-Peruvian tunes.
