The story centers on two Cold War arms negotiators, one American and one Soviet, who are locked in a standstill at the bargaining table. Frustrated, they take a walk in the woods to discuss nuclear disarmament, and to their surprise, develop an unlikely friendship. The play poses the question: is nuclear disarmament an attainable reality?

Originally written for two male characters, TimeLine Theatre Company’s current production of the play features actress Janet Ulrich Brooks in the role of the Russian negotiator. We speak with Blessing, Brooks and the production’s other star, David Parkes, about this twist on the Tony and Pulitzer-nominated play, which runs through November 20 at Chicago’s Theater Wit.

Tue, 25 Oct 2011 16:50:00 -0500 http://www.wbez.org/episode-segments/2011-10-25/inside-play-%E2%80%98-walk-woods%E2%80%99-93462 'The Day the Wall Went Up’ Part 2: BBC documentary marks 50th anniversary of Berlin Wall http://www.wbez.org/episode-segments/2011-08-22/day-wall-went-up%E2%80%99-part-2-bbc-documentary-marks-50th-anniversary-berlin-w

Last Friday, we reflected on important anniversaries of the Cold War -- one of which was the construction of the Berlin Wall. Fifty years ago this month, East and West Germany were cut off from each other. To remember these harrowing days, we presented Part 1 of the BBC series The Day the Wall Went Up.

Today, Worldview presents the global premier of the second and final part of The Day the Wall Went Up. Germans who lived in Berlin when the wall divided their nation share stories of this divisive time, including some courageous attempts to escape communist-run East Germany. The BBC will premier this documentary tomorrow.

"The Day the Wall Went Up" was provided by the BBC World Service. The wall, more than a mere physical boundary between East and West Germany, was a barrier to living life as usual, separating people from family, friends and jobs for 28 years. In so doing, it became the iconic symbol of the Cold War.

On the 50th anniversary of the Berlin Wall's erection, The BBC’s Gerry Northam examines the Wall’s political context and revisits the day that signified the peak of the Cold War, the constant threat of nuclear war and the human price paid for entrenched ideologies.

"The Day the Wall Went Up" was provided by the BBC World Service.

Fri, 19 Aug 2011 18:33:00 -0500 http://www.wbez.org/episode-segments/2011-08-19/%E2%80%98-day-wall-went-up%E2%80%99-bbc-documentary-marks-50th-anniversary-berlin-wall-9
