To summarize in two words or less: BLOWN AWAY.

Now, Mission #64.

Let's start with this definition of a pinky swear from Wikipedia:

To pinky swear is when two people entwine their pinky fingers to signify that a promise has been made. It is often seen in Japanese anime, where it is called a yubikiri (指切り It is also possible for a pinky swear to exist between 3 parties, known as a 3-way pinky promise. A pinky swear between 4 or more people is relatively unknown.

I knew I wanted to do a pinky swear mission for a while. But when I read the above and learned of its Japanese connection, I realized this is the absolute right week. I know all of us have Japan and its people heavy on our minds.

So here is my idea:

Let's all make one massive pinky swear together!

Wikipedia says that a pinky swear between 4 or more is unknown-- what about a pinky swear between 100 or 500 of us?! All I can say is, Wikipedia is about to hear from Mission Amy KR!

The question is: What should our swear be?

I was recently inspired by the words of pioneer/social activist/TED speaker Jacqueline Novogratz who said:

"Your job is not to be perfect. Your job is only to be human."

I love that. So, here's my idea, but I am so totally open to yours.

Let's make a pinky swear to live by - and teach our children - that statement. And maybe we can also tuck in there to Always Trust Magic. :)

If you're in, just put your name and pinky in the comment section! (and/or suggest another line we can all swear on)

(and btw, as a gesture of my commitment, I'm gonna paint just my pinky nail with polish; you're welcome to do the same.)

yours,

amy

Mon, 14 Mar 2011 15:41:00 -0500 http://www.wbez.org/blog/mission-amy-kr/2011-03-14/mission-64-lets-break-record-and-do-worlds-biggest-pinky-swear-83670 Mission #51: What does ATM stand for? We even made a video about it, remember?

Well, this week we've taking our ATM manifesto to a whole new level: we've created spiffy wallet-size ATM cards for you! Simply click here and print. Yes, a whole sheet of Always Trust Magic cards. Is your life complete now or what?

You'll see on the card that I've expounded on the acronym; ATM might also stand for Acknowledge Tiny Miracles.

You'll also see that the last line on the card is blank, so you can write in whatever ATM means to you. But before you run off to print out your ATM cards, I'd like to ask you to share your original ATM acronym in the comment section below. Always Trust Magic (photos included) http://www.wbez.org/amykr/2010/01/mission-accomplished-atm-always-trust-magic-photos-included/11768
So much can happen in a week. I was reminded that you don't always need to know where you're going before you take your first step. That the path has a tendency to properly unfold if you let it. What I mean is: I didn't have "all this" (this blog) perfectly worked out in my head before I said yes to it and jumped in. Of course the key things were there (general idea, really good gut feeling, wonderful collaborators at WBEZ/Vocalo)...but there were many unknowns. I mean, I've never technically blogged before. But here we are. We've done something together! Just look at all those passionate comments below (from Monday's post). Just look at my favorite photos that came in this week! Thank you all for being here and helping lead the way. Many of your comments and e-mails were signed off with "ATM!" Therefore, this blog officially has a new motto: ATM! Always Trust Magic. I don't know if we're going to hit our 15,000 page view goal by end of day or not; time will tell. But either way, as far as I'm concerned: Mission accomplished everyone. See you back here Monday. ATM! Always Trust Magic, miss amy k.r. (ed note: Amy is at about 9k pageviews. She needs 6k to make her goal by end of day. So what do you say we trade BUZZ FOR A BUZZ?

You all help me reach 15,000 views by Friday, and guess what---drinks are on me!

It's super simple: You help spread the word by tweeting, blogging, Facebook, email, skywriting, whatever suits your fancy. And then just email me your name and city. If this here blog hits 15,000 page views by Friday, you will get an email announcing the Chicago hotspot location and time where drinks will be on me!

Don't live in or near Chicago? I will be making a special short film thanking each and everyone one of you non-Chicagoans by name, and then posting it here for the world to see.

TO RECAP:

1. I sit at the same table, same chair, facing the same direction. When I look up from my computer, I look straight out the window to an ATM across the street; that's my view. All this to say that I spend a fair amount of time staring into space (thinking about whatever I'm working on, writing about) with those 3 letters as some kind of subliminal wallpaper.

And this is how I decided that ATM will no longer stand for Automated Teller Machine. Where's the poetry in that? I've decided that ATM stands for Always Trust Magic.

(Ed. note - don't skip the video. We can write our notes on post-its, on ATM receipts, on napkins, even on dollar bills. Write whatever you want as long as it's nice. And as long as you don't try to sell anybody anything -- this is meant to be a no strings attached act.
