Now, he's trying to convince local audiences that his funky hip-hop and rap-inspired jams are something they can get behind too. Currently living in New York City, Jovanotti (born Lorenzo Cherubini) described himself as a "pilgrim" on Wednesday's Worldview:

"I am here on a pilgramage. I was born in Rome and I used to see American people coming to Rome to see the ancient roots of their culture. I'm doing the same thing in reverse. I'm here to pay my tribute to my musical culture, where I come from. That's America, that's funk, that's hip hop, that's American song writing. This is the music that really changed my life when I was a kid and so every musician born in my situation in Italy has this kind of depth with this country, which this incredible musical heritage.

I'm trying to spread my music all over, wherever I can. Wherever they invite me, I go."

He and his band are performing at The Vic Wednesday night at 7:30 pm. Plus, watch them just jam in studio during a pledge pitch break:

Wed, 17 Oct 2012 15:09:00 -0500 http://www.wbez.org/blogs/bez/2012-10/video-italian-superstar-jovanotti-wows-america-one-jam-time-103211 Weekender with Alison Cuddy http://www.wbez.org/blog/city-room-blog/2011-11-25/weekender-alison-cuddy-94263

For most of us Thanksgiving means turkey for dinner. But many use the holiday to ponder deeper relationships to the big, meaty bird. These days some folks go the extra mile to make feasting on the bird more meaningful. Maybe they agree with Benjamin Franklin - who in jest deemed turkey a 'more respectable bird' than America's national symbol, the eagle? But why stop at turkey? The birds are everywhere! Angry Birds, the popular mobile app, is now entering the stuffed toy market. And take a look at this creepy mash-up of Angry Birds and Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds. If that revenge scenario has you regretting the feast you just consumed check out Peggy MacNamara, artist in residence at The Field Museum. MacNamara’s not only drawn many of the bird specimens held by the Museum - 18 of her own paintings are also on permanent display.

Other picks for the weekend are below. And big thanks to The Chicago Film Archive for providing the vintage sounds of Chicago's holiday season (The Big Downtown Christmas, Charles Sharp, 1962).

Here are Weekender's top 6 picks:

1.
