The district includes six elementary schools, a preschool and a middle school.</p><p>Negotiators aren&#39;t yet disclosing details of the tentative agreement. They reached the deal early Thursday after nearly 12 hours of talks with a federal mediator. Jim Pergander of the Lake County Federation of Teachers says the talks stalled over pay.</p><p>District 46 teachers currently earn an average of $57,000 per year.</p></p> Wed, 16 Jan 2013 09:19:00 -0600 http://www.wbez.org/news/strike-cancels-classes-northern-illinois-district-104954 Suburban Chicago teachers file intent to strike http://www.wbez.org/news/suburban-chicago-teachers-file-intent-strike-104547 <p><p>WEST CHICAGO, Ill. &mdash; Teachers in a suburban Chicago school district have given notice they could strike as early as Jan. 7.</p><p>The Daily Herald in Arlington Heights <a href="http://bit.ly/U3FwkR" target="_blank">reports</a> teachers in West Chicago Elementary District 33 voted earlier this month to file their intent to strike. The paperwork was filed Friday.</p><p>A union official said teachers had been hopeful they could reach a compromise with the school board over key issues, particularly regarding health insurance premiums. But she said no compromise had been reached as of this week.</p><p>The school board president said the district must cap the amount it pays for health insurance in order to balance the budget.</p><p>The two sides also have disagreed on salary and class sizes.</p><p>Jan. 7 would be students&#39; first day of school following the holiday break.</p></p> Sat, 22 Dec 2012 18:26:00 -0600 http://www.wbez.org/news/suburban-chicago-teachers-file-intent-strike-104547 Emanuel defends trip to Charlotte while teachers strike looms http://www.wbez.org/series/boys-bus/emanuel-defends-trip-charlotte-while-teachers-strike-looms-102195 <img typeof="foaf:Image" src="http://llnw.wbez.org//main-images/rahmDNC.jpg" alt="" /><p><p>Mayor Rahm Emanuel is defending his decision to go to Charlotte, N.C., for the Democratic National Convention instead of negotiating with teachers in Chicago.</p><p>Following his address to the full DNC <a href="http://www.wbez.org/series/boys-bus/dnc-emanuel-seeks-revive-excitement-obama-102170">on Tuesday night</a>, Emanuel riled up the Illinois delegation in a raucous speech Wednesday morning.</p><p>But after his speech, Emanuel was swarmed by Chicago media. He said his aides are negotiating with the Chicago Teachers Union, even though he&rsquo;s in Charlotte.</p><p>&quot;The president and his team asked me to come and speak. I&rsquo;m going to be here,&quot; he said. &quot;I don&rsquo;t think the 36 hours - we miss a beat.&quot;</p><p>Meanwhile, the Chicago negotiations are being watched on a broader scale even by those not directly involved. Cinda Klickna&rsquo;s in Charlotte representing the Illinois Education Association.</p><p>&quot;It&rsquo;s comforting to be here and hear support for unions so I hope that that can be brought into Chicago because what happens in Chicago affects the rest of us, too,&quot; she said.</p><p>Emanuel is expected to arrive back in Chicago later Wednesday in the evening.<br />&nbsp;</p></p> Wed, 05 Sep 2012 13:27:00 -0500 http://www.wbez.org/series/boys-bus/emanuel-defends-trip-charlotte-while-teachers-strike-looms-102195 Rockford schools strike continues into second day http://www.wbez.org/story/rockford-schools-strike-continues-second-day-97755 <p><p>Planned auditions for students interested in attending the Rockford School District's Creative and Performing Arts program have been canceled due to the teachers' strike.</p><p>Auditions were scheduled for Friday and Saturday will be rescheduled once the district finalizes a labor agreement with its teachers.</p><p>About 1,500 members of the Rockford Education Association decided to go on strike after negotiations failed to result in a deal.</p><p>Efforts to agree on a new contract have been under way since April.
