The bill would require those in the country illegally to pass a driver's test and buy insurance. Lawmakers estimate 250,000 immigrant drivers in Illinois don't have proper licenses.

Republican State Sen. Bill Brady was one of the 41 votes approving the measure.

“We live in an imperfect world and an imperfect state,” Brady said. “The fact of the matter is, there is a cost to society when we have uninsured, untrained and untested drivers. The fact of the matter is, they are not going to self-deport. They’re not gonna — the federal government’s not going to deport them. They are here.”

Leaders from both parties in the House and Senate have also endorsed the proposal, saying it will help make Illinois’ roads safer.

Fourteen state senators voted against the proposal.

“Now we’re expected to believe that folks who are already breaking the immigration law, the employment law, the traffic laws are now going to follow the insurance laws,” said State Sen. Chris Lauzen.

Gov. Pat Quinn has said he favors the legislation.

Tue, 04 Dec 2012 16:04:00 -0600 http://www.wbez.org/news/illinois-senate-approves-drivers-licenses-those-country-illegally-104191 Powerful Illinois politicians push for driver's licenses for immigrants here illegally http://www.wbez.org/news/powerful-illinois-politicians-push-drivers-licenses-immigrants-here-illegally-103949

Several powerful Illinois Democrats are supporting a measure that would give driver’s licenses to immigrants who are here illegally.

The governor’s office estimates 250,000 immigrants are on Illinois roads without having passed a driving test.

Illinois State Senate President John Cullerton said he wants the legislation to come up for a vote during the veto session, which starts next week.

“Our insurance premiums will go down. The crashes on our highways and the fatalities will go down. And we will have a record for people who are stopped for traffic violations,” Cullerton said. “And so it’s really a highway safety measure in my mind. It obviously has some other benefits. It’s very symbolic, but it’s also very practical.”

A spokesman for the Illinois Secretary of State’s office said drivers in Illinois currently need a Social Security Number to get a license.

Meanwhile, representatives for the Republican leaders in the House and Senate were not immediately available for comment.

But two Republicans spoke in favor of the legislation at the same event as Cullerton. Former Illinois Gov. Jim Edgar called the proposal “morally fair, economically sound and politically smart,” while Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka said the measure was a long time coming.

Both Edgar and Topinka are not able to vote on the measure since they’re not members of the Illinois General Assembly.

Tue, 20 Nov 2012 16:45:00 -0600 http://www.wbez.org/news/powerful-illinois-politicians-push-drivers-licenses-immigrants-here-illegally-103949
