WBEZ | hotel http://www.wbez.org/tags/hotel Latest from WBEZ Chicago Public Radio en Classic skyscraper to become hotel, puts spotlight on Chicago corner http://www.wbez.org/blogs/lee-bey/2013-08/classic-skyscraper-become-hotel-puts-spotlight-chicago-corner-108273 <p><div class="image-insert-image "><img alt="" class="image-original_image" src="http://www.wbez.org/system/files/styles/original_image/llo/insert-images/P7176346.jpg" style="width: 600px; height: 800px;" title="" /></div><div class="image-insert-image ">It&#39;s <a href="http://www.suntimes.com/news/21609133-418/investment-groups-acquire-landmark-360-n-michigan-ave-office-building-hotel-planned.html" target="_blank">good to hear</a> the former London Guarantee Building, a gracious Beaux Arts skyscraper that has been home to a <a href="http://www.craigslostchicago.com/resources/photo-chicago-london-house-restaurant-wacker-drive-near-michigan-19521.jpg" target="_blank">jazz club</a>, insurance companies and a&nbsp;<a href="http://www.wlshistory.com/WLS60/" target="_blank">major radio station</a>, will be converted into a hotel.</div><div class="image-insert-image ">&nbsp;</div><div class="image-insert-image ">To think the building was almost 70 percent vacant 20 years ago, rotting under the ownership of New York City landlord Helmsley Spear. Built in 1923 and designed by noted architect Alfred S. Alschuler, the building was granted city landmark status in 1996. New ownership kept the structure afloat and made key repairs, including a 2001 renovation that revealed a coffered rotunda lobby ceiling.</div><div class="image-insert-image ">&nbsp;</div><div class="image-insert-image ">A representative of the two investment groups that recently bought the building told the <em>Chicago Sun-Times</em> the former office block at 360 N. Michigan Ave. would be turned &ldquo;into a high design lifestyle hotel with two stories of distinctive Michigan Avenue retail.&rdquo; The city&#39;s landmarks staff would monitor renovations with an eye toward making sure the building&#39;s landmark elements are not altered.</div><div class="image-insert-image ">&nbsp;</div><div class="image-insert-image ">The London Guarantee&#39;s come-up couldn&#39;t happen to a nicer building &mdash; or downtown locale, for that matter. The corner of Wacker Drive and Michigan Avenue, for my money, is one of the finest urban vistas in America. The demonstration was organized by Unite Here, which represents Hyatt Hotel workers.</p><p>Hyatt is a major source of the Pritzker family wealth and Penny Pritzker currently sits on their board. The union says that a Commerce Secretary&#39;s first concern should be good jobs for Americans but that is not what her work with Hyatt demonstrates.</p><p>The union says the workload for housekeepers is unreasonable and results in injuries.</p><p>Lesley Newson was still in her housekeeping uniform when she showed up to the rally.</p><p>&quot;A lot of us sustain back injury, some have neck or shoulder pain,&quot; she said.&nbsp;</p><p>Cathy Youngblood works at a Hyatt in West Hollywood and has been traveling the country speaking out. She is angry that Hyatt has been hiring more temporary workers at minimum wage and without benefits.</p><p>&quot;Hyatt is leading the industry in the race to the bottom,&quot; Youngblood said. &quot;We think Hyatt could do better. We think it&rsquo;s time for Hyatt to change.&quot;</p><p>In a written statement Hyatt said that Unite Here is spreading misinformation in order to get publicity.</p><p><em>Shannon Heffernan is a WBEZ reporter.
