Thanksgiving! Ahhh, a day filled with turkey, football, family, and friends. Sitting down at the dinner table, catching up with loved ones from different places, and stuffing yourselves (literally). To many of us, we take this day for granted. Why? The reason is, most of us have family, relatives, or friends, who welcome us into their homes for this happy time of year. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people in Chicago who are not as lucky as we are. For this reason, I feel very fortunate to have a wonderful family who loves and cares for me, and provides me the opportunity to celebrate this day.

Thanks to my dad for exposing me to new and exotic foods. If it wasn't for him, congee would not be one of my favorite foods. I want to also thank my mom for all of the hard work she has done for my family. I really appreciate all she does for me.

This year I am thankful for a number of things. First, I am very thankful for knowing the pleasures of Great Lake. Without them, what would the world of pizza come to? Also, the ramen at Tampopo; the custard rolls at Phoenix; the kalbi and mook (acorn jelly) at Chicago Kalbi. Finally, the lemon ice at Johnnie's Beef. May I remind you, my dad's logo just happens to be on their cups. :)

It's important this time of year to help those who are less fortunate than us. So I would like to give you some links to some organizations that are helping people in need in our area:

Share Our Strength

Meals on Wheels Chicago

The Greater Chicago Food Depository

First Slice

I hope you can find it in your hearts to be generous this holiday season. Happy Thanksgiving!

- Madeline Dolinsky

Thu, 25 Nov 2010 11:46:00 -0600 http://www.wbez.org/blog/steve-dolinsky/things-be-thankful-fora-guest-blogger
