And that makes sense &ndash; given that it&rsquo;s based on an actual chance gathering and collaboration by unstoppable and incomparable musicians.</p><p>MDQ is a story wrapped around a one-night jam session that brought together four future music legends: Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins.</p><p><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="338" mozallowfullscreen="" src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/42417348?title=0&amp;byline=0&amp;portrait=0&amp;color=ff0000" webkitallowfullscreen="" width="600"></iframe></p><p>The meeting happened in early winter in of 1956 at Sun Record Studios in Memphis, Tennessee &ndash; each there for different reasons, but the resulting recording session came together as though it was destined to happen.</p><p><em>Eight Forty-Eight</em> is joined in our Jim and Kay Mabie Performance Studio on Friday by the actors/musicians who bring it all to life at Chicago&rsquo;s <a href="http://www.apollochicago.com/">Apollo Theatre</a>, where Million Dollar Quartet is currently running. They are Colte Julian (Jerry Lee Lewis), Shaun Whitley&nbsp;(Carl Perkins), Brandon Bennett (Elvis Presley), Sean Sullivan&nbsp;(Johnny Cash), Brad Ber (Jay Perkins) and Dan Leali (drums).</p><p><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="338" mozallowfullscreen="" src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/42416720?title=0&amp;byline=0&amp;portrait=0&amp;color=ff0000" webkitallowfullscreen="" width="600"></iframe></p></p> Fri, 18 May 2012 11:07:00 -0500 http://www.wbez.org/blogs/bez/2012-05/rock-n-roll-morning-million-dollar-quartet-99287 Chilean Miner Who Loves Elvis Pays Visit To Graceland http://www.wbez.org/story/around-nation/chilean-miner-who-loves-elvis-pays-visit-graceland <p><p>While he and 32 other Chilean miners were trapped deep underground for 69 days last fall, Edison Pena became known as the guy who tried to keep spirits up by singing songs made famous by his idol -- Elvis Presley.</p><p>Today in Memphis, Pena got to tour Graceland (which we probably don't need to tell most of you was Elvis' home).</p><p><a href="http://www.commercialappeal.com/news/2011/jan/07/rescued-chilean-miner-elvis-fanatic-visits-gracela/" target="_blank"><em>The Commercial Appeal </em>says</a> the 34-year-old Pena "had a big smile on his face, gesturing with his hands as he tried to describe his feelings. 'How can I describe something so amazing?' he asked, shrugging. 'Just coming in the driveway you feel moved.' By the time he reached the meditation garden at the end of his tour, he said he felt 'paralyzed'."</p><p>And, true to form, during the tour Pena belted out a few of the King's hits, including <em>Heartbreak Hotel</em> and <em>Suspicious Minds</em>.</p><p>You could say he got all shook up: Copyright 2011 National Public Radio. The photographer traveled the country documenting the style-and lifestyle-of rockabillies for her book, &quot;The Rockabillies&quot;. And while she says her aesthetic sensibilities first drew her to this stylish bunch, she learned what beliefs and ideas brought this group of people together. She talked to Alison Cuddy about the subjects of her book earlier this year at <a target="_blank" href="http://www.nightanddayvintage.com/">Night and Day Vintage</a>, a frequent haunt for those looking for the rockabilly style. <br /><br />Jennifer Greenburg currently has work up as part of <a target="_blank" href="http://johallaprojects.wordpress.com/2010/12/02/the-daley-show/">&quot;The Daley Show&quot;</a>, presented by Chicago Urban Art Society and Johalla Project.
