Sure we can talk to fans, preview the game, give historical context, but what could we do to stand out in the chorus? Well, worry no more.

This download isn't for you. It's for the Bears players. It's a motivational piece of audio for them to load up on their iPods pre-game. Each player has their pump-up music or motivational speech to get them in the right football mindset. But maybe they need something more. Something bigger for the biggest game of their lives.

Enter Carl Kasell. If you think about it, the first line of defense is usually fat guys, and the first line of offense is fat guys. You know, that’s a bonus. You can move, and you got a big belly." That's according to Bears defensive tackle Anthony Adams--it's not about touchdowns or turnovers; it's about the fat guys.

So here’s to downing that deep dish fellas!

But seriously, with all the anticipation surrounding Sunday’s NFC Championship, this is a game with story lines on top of story lines. You’ve got your players, the coaches, the turf itself – talk about a deep dish!

To serve up a steaming hot slice, host Alison Cuddy spoke with "Eight Forty-Eight's" sports contributor Cheryl Raye-Stout. This is the second day in a row that Harris has sat out practice due to a hip pointer. Bears fans are hoping the veteran safety will be healthy enough to play in the NFC Championship on Sunday against the Packers.

WBEZ's Cheryl Raye Stout caught up with Harris in the locker room for a quick one-on-one interview. Harris says he's "100 percent certain" he's playing.

Harris was a starter on the 2006 Chicago Bears. He was traded to the Carolina Panthers after the Super Bowl. ESPN's Lester Munson told "Eight Forty-Eight," the Bears-Packer meet up is the biggest sports event in Chicago history. But there’s a whole lot more at stake in this game: The teams haven’t met in the post-season since 1941. And hands down, football’s greatest rivalry is between the Bears and the Pack.

In part, that’s because it goes way back, to the early days of the NFL. And it was cemented by two long-standing leaders of the Bears and the Packers - George Halas and Vince Lombardi. They also helped define the NFL – the NFC trophy is named for Halas and the Super Bowl trophy is named for Lombardi.

To find out more about this ancient bitter history "Eight Forty-Eight" turned to two experts. David Maraniss is a Pulizer-prize winning journalist, associate editor of the Washington Post and author of the book, "When Pride Still Mattered: A Life of Vince Lombardi." Lester Munson is a writer and investigative reporter for ESPN.

Music Button: Sam Spence, "Industrial Giant", from the CD NFL Films Music Library Vol. 1, (NFL Films)

Wed, 19 Jan 2011 14:55:00 -0600 http://www.wbez.org/episode-segments/halas-and-lombardi-loom-over-bears-packers-title-game
