The things the average woman carries around in her purse says a lot about her. I tend to carry a gigantic tote bag with me that doubles as a black hole, so I figured I'd bare myself to the world and let you peek inside my purse to see what are "my essentials." Don't judge me! I haven't cleaned it out in awhile.

1. This morning we talked about the 2nd Annual Baconfest over the weekend, and we mentioned that Nathan Sears from Vie in Western Springs took home the "Golden Rasher" for the best bacon dish. Well yesterday, as Sears was basking in the glory of his porcine victory, he also led an enthusiastic group of about 15 people through his regular series of "Whole Hog" classes at the restaurant.

I stopped by for awhile to see how the class is constructed, and was surprised to see only two women. The dudes in attendance were all stoked to not only see how a whole pig is taken apart, but they also got a tenderloin Milanese lunch, and will be able to take home sausage, bacon and in about two weeks, some homemade pancetta. See my video above for more details. Nathan's next class is in May (but it's sold out). Check the restaurant's website for details on their future "whole hog" classes.

Mon, 11 Apr 2011 17:00:00 -0500 http://www.wbez.org/blog/steve-dolinsky/2011-04-11/porkapalooza-part-2-going-whole-hog-vie-85000 Friday Foodie Forecast: Chocolate dine, wine and swine http://www.wbez.org/blog/steve-dolinsky/2011-02-04/friday-foodie-forecast-chocolate-dine-wine-and-swine-81726

Now that you’ve dug yourself out of the snow, check out some sweet and savory pairings in the week ahead. Whether it's a meet-and-greet with celebrity chefs featuring charitable cocoa-inspired cuisine, or learning more about wine and pig pairings while indulging in chocolate-dipped bacon, there are plenty of enticing events on deck.

Chocolate for a Cause

Indulge your chocolate cravings without any of the guilt this Saturday, Feb. 5, as The French Pastry School's scholarship foundation will hold its annual gala fundraiser, For the Love of Chocolate, at the Chicago Merchandise Mart from 7 pm to 11 pm.
