Wrong. <o:p></o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal">Highway road crews will once again be on full <st1:personname w:st="on">al</st1:personname>ert in <st1:place w:st="on">Northwest Indiana</st1:place> Thursday night. <o:p></o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal">While much of the snow from Wednesday&rsquo;s blizzard was removed from Interstate 80/94 and Interstate 65 in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placetype w:st="on">Lake</st1:placetype> <st1:placetype w:st="on">County</st1:placetype></st1:place>, there&rsquo;s a new threat: black ice. <o:p></o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal">&ldquo;That&rsquo;s a re<st1:personname w:st="on">al</st1:personname> concern,&rdquo; said Jim Pinkerton, spokesman for the LaPorte District of the Indiana Department of Transportation. &ldquo;The full crew will be out again tonight and that will be one of the things they will be looking at.&rdquo;<o:p></o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal">Black ice is dirty ice that remains on pavement. It&rsquo;s extremely hard to detect, especi<st1:personname w:st="on">al</st1:personname>ly at night. <o:p></o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal">And in extremely low temperatures, s<st1:personname w:st="on">al</st1:personname>t and other snow-melting agents have a difficult time melting snow. <o:p></o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal">&ldquo;When the temperatures dip to zero or below zero it re<st1:personname w:st="on">al</st1:personname>ly lowers the effectiveness of the s<st1:personname w:st="on">al</st1:personname>t to actu<st1:personname w:st="on">al</st1:personname>ly to be able to melt any of that frozen materi<st1:personname w:st="on">al</st1:personname> off the roads,&rdquo; Pinkerton said. &ldquo;So, it&rsquo;s kind of a precarious position.&rdquo; <o:p></o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal">The stretch of of I-65 between <st1:city w:st="on">Crown Point</st1:city> and <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:city w:st="on">Lowell</st1:city>, <st1:state w:st="on">Indiana</st1:state></st1:place>, is especi<st1:personname w:st="on">al</st1:personname>ly prone to accumulating b<st1:personname w:st="on">la</st1:personname>ck ice. <o:p></o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal">Open farmland <st1:personname w:st="on">al</st1:personname>lows wind to quickly refreeze melted snow on the highway.<o:p></o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal">Dozens of vehicle accidents, some fat<st1:personname w:st="on">al</st1:personname>, have been reported in that area over the years.<o:p></o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal">Schools and government agencies in <st1:place w:st="on">Northwest Indiana</st1:place> were closed Wednesday for the second day in a row. <o:p></o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal">But the unscheduled winter break is ending Thursday morning, when classes are scheduled to resume and loc<st1:personname w:st="on">al</st1:personname> governments are set to reopen for business. <o:p></o:p></p><p>&nbsp;</p></p> Thu, 03 Feb 2011 23:33:00 -0600 http://www.wbez.org/story/indiana-department-transportation/black-ice-concern-nwi
