It all began in a somewhat unlikely time and place &ndash; in jail, during his troubled teen years.<br /><br />In the decades since, Rodriguez has become one of the most recognized Chicano writers in the country. His 1993 memoir <em>Always Running: La Vida Loca, Gang Days in L.A.&nbsp;</em>won him the Carl Sandburg Literary Award. He&rsquo;s written numerous books and won plenty of awards since then.<br /><br />But after launching his career in Chicago, he left more than a decade ago to resettle in LA.
