I wasn't kidding last week when I said I was out of town. The last week and a half I was in Italy with my husband Steve. He'd never been there, whereas I had spent a year in Florence while in college (and had traveled there in high school once before for a Latin field trip.) My mom forced me to keep travel journals since I was old enough to write, and the habit has stuck with me. So if you like reading about travels, or looking at photos of Italy, or plan on heading over there anytime soon, feel free to check out my entries on our stops in <a href="http://www.zulkey.com/2011/10/travel_log_days_1_and_2.php">Naples and Pompeii</a>, <a href="http://www.zulkey.com/2011/10/saturday_in_florence.php">Florence</a>, <a href="http://www.zulkey.com/2011/10/sunday_montalcino.php">Montalcino</a>, other bits of <a href="http://www.zulkey.com/2011/10/buon_halloween.php">Tuscany and Umbria</a>, <a href="http://www.zulkey.com/2011/11/tuesday_night.php">Vinci</a>,&nbsp; <a href="http://www.zulkey.com/2011/11/wednesday_last_night_in_floren.php">Fiesole</a>, <a href="http://www.zulkey.com/2011/11/saturday_night_in_london.php">Rome and the Vatican</a> and a tiny bit of <a href="http://www.zulkey.com/2011/11/last_days.php">London</a>. I brought back souvenirs for each one of you but they all got confiscated at customs, sorry.</p><p><img alt="" class="caption" src="http://llnw.wbez.org/blog/insert-image/2011-November/2011-11-09/funny kid.jpg" style="width: 300px; height: 452px;" title="This kid makes me laugh for some reason."><img alt="" class="caption" src="http://llnw.wbez.org/blog/insert-image/2011-November/2011-11-09/rome family.jpg" style="width: 300px; height: 452px;" title="A family resting at the Palatine in Rome"></p><p><img alt="" class="caption" src="http://llnw.wbez.org/blog/insert-image/2011-November/2011-11-09/brunello montalcino.jpg" style="width: 600px; height: 398px;" title="Someone takes a lie-down after too much Brunello at Sagra del Tordo"></p><p>&nbsp;</p></p> Wed, 09 Nov 2011 16:48:00 -0600 http://www.wbez.org/blog/claire-zulkey/2011-11-09/american-italy-or-i-traveled-all-way-europe-and-all-i-got-was-lousy-ti Global Notes: New documentary chronicles Neapolitan music scene with connections to mafia http://www.wbez.org/episode-segments/2011-03-23/global-notes-new-documentary-chronicles-neapolitan-music-scene-connectio <img typeof="foaf:Image" src="http://llnw.wbez.org/segment/photo/2011-March/2011-03-23/alessio.jpg" alt="" /><p><p>In Naples, Italy, the mafia syndicate known as the Camorra controls neighborhoods, the garbage industry, even the local music scene. They fund musicians dubbed &quot;neomelodics,&quot; mostly male artists who sing in the local Neapolitan dialect. While they&rsquo;re mega-stars at home, neomelodics are virtually unknown in the rest of Italy. A new <a href="http://www.vbs.tv/watch/music-world/neomelodics-part-1-of-3-alessio" target="_blank">documentary</a> about the scene debuts today on the online broadcast channel <a href="http://www.vbs.tv/" target="_blank">VBS</a>.
