Danny Solis introduced an ordinance to decriminalize marijuana possession this week. If the legislation passed, people caught carrying a small amount of the drug would pay a fine rather than face arrest. However, possession only represented one part of the overall marijuana economy in Chicago. The city has become a drug trafficking hub for cartels operating out of Mexico and medical marijuana growers out West also got in on the action. Chicago Sun-Times reporter Frank Main has been investigating marijuana in Chicago in a four-part series. He joined Eight Forty-Eight to talk about his reporting. Pulitzer Prize-winning Chicago Sun-Times reporter Frank Main’s third installment in his series on marijuana was out Thursday.

Thu, 03 Nov 2011 14:56:00 -0500 http://www.wbez.org/episode-segments/2011-11-03/frank-main-investigates-ins-and-outs-chicagos-marijuana-culture-93725 A closer look at new CPD chief Garry McCarthy's policing experience http://www.wbez.org/episode-segments/2011-05-03/closer-look-new-cpd-chief-garry-mccarthys-policing-experience-85997

On Monday, Mayor-elect Rahm Emanuel named his choice to lead the Chicago Police Department. Garry McCarthy comes with big city policing experience. Before he led Newark, New Jersey’s, police force, McCarthy helped bring down crime in New York City. He’s had to deal with at least two public cases of police misconduct. The first was broken by WBEZ, after uncovering a video which appears to show police allowing the intimidation of a young man in their custody. Then came allegations of sexual assault--two officers are being investigated for the sexual assault of a 22-year-old woman on the far North Side.

To find out what these cases mean for the Chicago Police Department, Eight Forty-Eight spoke to Chicago Sun-Times crime reporter Frank Main.

Tue, 05 Apr 2011 13:38:00 -0500 http://www.wbez.org/episode-segments/2011-04-05/allegations-misconduct-trouble-chicago-police-department-84760
