The Black History Month themed assembly, held Feb. 27, was organized by OPRF Principal Nate Rouse, with the intent to gather the school's black community to discuss racial equity, black culture in the OPRF community and to touch on the August shooting of Ferguson Missouri’s Michael Brown. The assembly - the first in a series of “affinity group” gatherings - has stirred controversy among students and community members who feel that it was unfair not to allow students of other races to attend.Monday night, School District 200 held its first board meeting since the event and allowed time for an open dialogue on the matter. Wednesday Journal D200 reporter Michael Romain has been covering the Board and attended last night's meeting. And the surprise is… it will build it on property that the university already owns. This comes as a surprise to many who’ve been familiar with the school’s bid to acquire private properties just north of its campus via eminent domain. Meanwhile, there’s a new bill in the state legislature that would place new limits on how public universities could use eminent domain. The Blues became electrified and spread around the world when Muddy Waters started playing here. And club music would never be the same after Frankie Knuckles came to Chicago from the Bronx to spin records. A new movie is in the works to honor Knuckles, the scene, and the music he created. We’re talking about fairy tales. For example, the live-action remake of Disney’s Cinderella topped the U.S. box office for the weekend with over $70 million in ticket sales. And while Frozen may be a modern-day fairy tale, it’s proof that tales of princesses, talking animals, baddies, and a bit of magic continue to have a powerful hold on our imagination.
