Those events also suggest we need a re-think of the relationship between markets and governments, especially around the issue of regulation.

That’s one of the sidebars of the latest book from Francis Fukuyama. The Origins of Political Order: From Prehuman Times to the French Revolution is very interested in current affairs - including economic disparities in the West and political revolt in the Middle East. But it is also an exploration, on the epic scale, of how we got to this point. How did various countries develop politically, in many cases moving from societies organized by tribes to states grounded in political institutions?

On Thursday, April 28, Dr. Fukuyama will discuss his book at The Chicago Council on Global Affairs. His talk is part of their Global Economy series. He joined Eight Fort-Eight to discuss the book.

Music Button: Jessica Williams Trio, "The Seeker", from the CD Freedom Trane, (Origin)

Mon, 25 Apr 2011 13:01:00 -0500 http://www.wbez.org/episode-segments/2011-04-25/examining-origins-political-order-85631
