At one time I belonged to the Rocky Horror Picture Show Fan Club. We are not doing anything “new” with the show. In fact, the stage script has been amended and edited to more closely resemble the movie.. think of it as a homage to the work of Jim Sharmen and his rendition of this classic piece of contemporary musical theatre. The dance group Cloud Gate of Taiwan is coming to Columbia College in October, as well as opening the Dance Center's 2011-12 season by performing in their FamilyDance Matinee Series. Each performance during the residency will include words from director Lin Hwai-min, and there will be DanceMasters classes taught by company member Su I-ping. I haven't spoken to her about it, but I'm guessing our resident dance expert Laura Molzahn will be all over this soon.

5. He’s a writer, producer, director, actor and stand-up comedian. He co-stars and executive produces the long-running HBO series Curb Your Enthusiasm. But this summer, Garlin is coming back to Chicago for a special run at Steppenwolf Theatre. His one-man show is called No Sugar Tonight and it kicks off July 13. But his trips home are bittersweet. He returns regularly to visit his parents who are both currently undergoing treatment for cancer at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Eight Forty-Eight's Jason Marck recently talked to him about his life and career in Chicago-and the time after he left.

Music Button: Luciano Michelin, "Frolic" (theme from Curb Your Enthusiasm)

Thu, 07 Jul 2011 13:50:00 -0500 http://www.wbez.org/episode-segments/2011-07-07/comedian-and-writer-jeff-garlin-returns-chicago-88821 Morning Rehearsal: Chicago theater 4/26 http://www.wbez.org/blog/onstagebackstage/2011-04-26/morning-rehearsal-chicago-theater-426-85688

1. The trees are actually slowly dying, and Assistant Production Manager Matt Chandler says that their branches have “begun to droop and we are constantly trimming them during the run."

2. Soul Samurai opened last night at Theater Wit. Fans of Larry David will be pleased, at least a little; for one week, Curb Your Enthusiasm co-star Jeff Garlin will be at the Steppenwolf Upstairs Theater, July 13-24. The show is called "No Sugar Tonight", and tickets will be on sale Friday. Though this is slightly outside of Chicago's scope, Kate Powers writes about Michael McKean of Steppenwolf visiting the imprisoned men she works with through Rehabilitation Through the Arts (RTA) in New York. McKean originated the role of Arthur Przybyszewski in Superior Donuts, so Powers thought it would be a natural fit for him to come help out. McKean was drawn to the play himself because “redemption is our favorite story. Arthur exists without the kindness of the world, and he is able to find a way to redeem the 40 years he’s lost," which Powers said immediately resonated with the men.

5. 2 Black Dudes and an Open Mic are at Town Hall Pub tonight at 9 pm (last Tuesday of the month people).
