Adriana Cardona-Maguigad
Adriana Cardona-Maguigad is a Pritzker Journalism Fellow.
Adriana has worked as the editor for The Gate, a publication of the Back of the Yards Neighborhood Council, the organization that nominated her.
She grew up in Medellin, Colombia, and moved to Iowa at the age of 17. After college, she worked going door-to-door in the trailer parks of rural Iowa, welcoming new immigrants, many of whom lived in extreme poverty, and helping them navigate the many challenges of adjusting to their lives in the U.S. In Chicago, she worked as a grassroots organizer, then as an internship coordinator at a CPS school that was slated for closing. Her work organizing the campaign against the school closing brought her to the attention of BYNC, who asked her to become the editor of their new publication, in spite of the fact that she had no journalism experience at the time.
Adriana is a 35 under 35 Community Leadership Award recipient with the Chicago Renewal Society. She has a B.A in International Studies from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa.
Adriana resides in the Pilsen neighborhood with her family.
