Alex is one of WBEZ's political reporters. He covers federal, state and local government and politics, with a particular interest in LGBT rights, gun rights and municipal finance. Alex's work on the state's pension troubles have won him awards from the Illinois Associated Press and the Society of Professional Journalists. His journalism has also been recognized by Public Radio News Directors Incorporated, and he was named Best Newswriter by the Illinois AP in 2011 and 2013. Alex also relishes his time on-air as one of WBEZ's fill-in news anchors.

Alex got his start in journalism at WVIK-FM in Rock Island, Ill., as a reporter and anchor, and he has also worked with Capitol News Connection covering Congress in Washington, D.C. He has a master's degree from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism, and he studied fiction writing at Knox College in Galesburg, Ill.

Alex grew up in Roselle, Ill., and is the proud son of former longtime Chicago radio newsman Barry Keefe, who taught him everything he knows about the family business. Alex and his wife live in Chicago's Lincoln Square neighborhood, where they can often be found playing fetch with their mutt, Sallie.
