In this week’s election, ballot questions in two Chicago wards tackled issues of housing and gentrification.

In both cases, voters said they wanted more restrictions on new development.

The referenda are advisory, so they don’t have any teeth.

But they send a message that Chicagoans who witnessed skyrocketing property values in neighborhoods like Wicker Park and Lakeview don’t want the same thing to happen in their communities.
