The Illinois Department of Transportation is not following the law when it awards state contracts.

That’s the finding of a report released today by the Illinois Auditor General, William Holland.

Holland says his office reviewed 10 contracts totalling $45 million dollars.

In each case, IDOT staff failed to show how they awarded contracts.

Holland says, “When you don’t have that docuentation and you don’t know how somebody received the contract, then there really isn’t accountability for how that decision was made.”

He says his office has passed the findings on to state and federal authorities.

An IDOT spokesman says the agency is investigating the irregularities.

He says some of the problems might be due to inexperienced staff.
