County Budget Cuts Fuel Doctors' Union Drive

SHARE County Budget Cuts Fuel Doctors' Union Drive

Cook County’s budget fight is behind an effort by county doctors to unionize.

Physicians at Stroger Hospital, the county jail, and Cermak Medical Center want to join the Service Employees International Union.

The push comes while the county tries to cut one hundred and forty million dollars from its health budget.

County Commissioner Roberto Maldanado thanks collective bargaining will prevent future budget battles.

Maldonado says, “They should be engaged in talking with the administration, not leaving them out, leaving them in the dark and just being told that they’re getting pink slips in the near future. That’s wrong and I hope that will change very, very soon.”

The union drive won’t affect this round of budget haggling, though.

The county has to balance its budget by the end of February.

Union reps say there’s little chance a doctors’ union could be in place by then.
