Aurora May Ban Flag Waving from Cars

Aurora city council may criminalize celebrations from motor vehicles.

Honking and waving flags from cars could result in a $250 fine.

Ricardo Meza is an attorney with a Mexican American advocacy group.

He says on its face the ordinance is not discriminatory, but…

MEZA: It’s coming at a time when there’s a lot of anti immigrant sentiment and there’s a feeling that if somebody waves a Mexican flag they’re somehow unpatriotic where you don’t hear too much of that when folks are celebrating St. Patrick’s Day or other sorts of ethnic celebrations.

Alderman Juany Garza is the first Hispanic on Aurora city council.

She supports the ordinance and says it will promote safety.

The Aurora city council is expected to take up the measure Tuesday.
