Velazquez Wins in Portage

SHARE Velazquez Wins in Portage

The largest city in Porter County, Indiana, may be getting its first female mayor.

Chicago Public Radio’s Michael Puente reports from our Northwest Indiana Bureau.

Olga Velazquez is already hearing grumblings about her victory in yesterday’s Democratic primary for mayor of Portage.

Some longtime Democrats are steaming over Velazquez’s win and are threatening to vote for a yet-to-be-named Republican candidate in the fall.

But Velazquez, a member of the Portage City Council, isn’t worrying about that right now.

VELAZQUEZ: “I’m very excited about the opportunity to lead my city and realize the goals that we’ve identified through our comprehensive planning. We’re the third largest city in Northwest Indiana. We have so much potential.”

Besides Portage, Crown Point is another Northwest Indiana city where a woman could lead as mayor for the first time.

Gayle Van Sessen won the Republican nomination over incumbent Mayor Dan Klein. She’s the odds on favorite to win in the fall.
