Kicking Off Chicago's Beach Season

SHARE Kicking Off Chicago's Beach Season

Chicago’s beach season officially kicks off this weekend.

The Chicago Park District spent the week combing beaches and putting up lifeguard perches and signs.

Ellen Sargent oversees the department’s green initiatives. She says they’re ready for Memorial Day crowds.

SARGENT: On a nice weekend we expect the beach to be packed. Especially since we’ve had such beautiful weather up until then. Everyone’s been ready to get out into the beach.

Park officials say beachgoers will also see something new this year.

Crews will put out new solar-powered trash compactors at some city beaches. The compactors hold double the amount of trash as the regular bins. That should cut down on how often trash needs to be collected.
