Clergy Sex Abuse Settlements Announced

SHARE Clergy Sex Abuse Settlements Announced

The settlements bring to a close 14 civil child molestations lawsuits against a dozen current and former Chicago-area priests.

One of the largest individual settlements involved Keith Laarveld, who was abused beginning at age eight at St. John the Worker Parish and School in Wheeling.

Laarveld says the abuse continued for five years.

Now 33, he first told his wife and parents of the abuse just a few years ago, after a failed suicide attempt.

LAARVELD: I battle my inner demons every day. Settlement or not, that’s never going to go away.

Laarveld’s abuser, Vincent McCaffrey, is now serving a 20-year prison sentence outside Boston for child pornography.

The lawyers who announced the settlements say they’re now launching a pro bono effort to investigate predatory priests.
