Study: Many in Cook County Hungry

SHARE Study: Many in Cook County Hungry

Many in Cook County are going hungry and there aren’t enough soup kitchens and food banks to feed them.

That’s according to a new study released today by the Greater Chicago Food Depository and the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Kate Maehr is executive director of the Food Depository.

MAEHR: It’s always a humbling thing to think about the fact that in what I think is the greatest city in the world that there is still a persistent need for emergency and supplemental food.
The study identified ten county communities where emergency food distribution is lacking. Most are concentrated in the West and South sides of Chicago, with a couple in the South suburbs.

Maehr says the Food Depository will step up efforts to distribute food in these neighborhoods.
