Congressmen Seek Independent Board for Health Bureau

Rep. Danny Davis

Two Chicago-area congressmen are joining the call for an independent board to oversee Cook County’s struggling health bureau. Representatives Danny Davis and Jan Schakowsky say the shift in governance should happen immediately.

Davis and Schakowsky appeared at a now defunct health clinic on Chicago’s South Side. They used it as an example of the extreme cuts imposed by the health bureau earlier this year, which both say left poor people throughout the county without proper care. Representative Davis says the Cook County Board should relinquish control of the health system to a temporary board.

DAVIS: It takes a lot of analysis, it takes a lot of work to arrive at decision-making.

A blue-ribbon committee last month recommended the county turn over the management of its health bureau to an independent board.

A spokesperson from Board President Todd Stroger’s office says he’s not interested in a temporary fix. She says Stroger has appointed a task force to study the matter with a report due January 16.
