Ryan Arrives at Prison

Former Illinois governor George Ryan has arrived at the federal prison camp in Oxford, Wisconsin. He was ordered to report there today to begin serving his six and a half year sentence.

Ryan entered the prison though a back gate. An Oxford spokeswoman said high profile inmates like Ryan are often admitted that way for security reasons. Published reports say it also meant he avoided a crowd of reporters waiting at the front entrance. Ryan left his family’s home in Kankakee early this morning with his wife Lura Lynn and his attorney, former Illinois governor Jim Thompson.

Ryan learned yesterday that the Supreme Court would not allow him to remain free on bail while it decided whether to hear his case. Ryan has lived at home since he was convicted on fraud and racketeering charges in 2006.
