Minority Candidates Say They're Targets in States Attorney Race

Two minority candidates for Cook County states attorney claim a black Chicago alderman is trying to knock them off the ballot. Tommy Brewer and Anita Alvarez say a supporter of Alderman Howard Brookins, Jr. is challenging the validity of their nominating petitions. But Brewer says the real issue is that Brookins will lose the race if he and Alvarez are allowed to run.

BREWER: He might as well pitch up his tent and go home if I’m on the ballot. We always knew that he did not have a prayer and he has no campaign strategy beyond that. If I’m there, he’s through.

A spokeswoman for Alvarez says both Alvarez and Brewer were targeted because they could take minority votes away from Brookins. Brookins says his campaign is not directly connected with the petition challenge.
