Gary Airport Feeling Left Out

SHARE Gary Airport Feeling Left Out

Officials at the Gary Chicago airport are wondering when airlines will finally decide to use the facility to ease congestion at O’Hare and Midway.

The runway’s there. The terminal’s ready. All that’s needed are airlines.

But getting major carriers to use the Gary Chicago airport is proving far more difficult than even maneuvering around crowded terminals during the holiday rush.

Ross Amundson, a member of the airport authority, says he doesn’t understand why airlines aren’t using Gary airport.

AMUNDSON: Why this hasn’t happened is a mystery to some people. It makes all the sense in the world. And, the trends are certainly on our side: gas is up , flight numbers are still going up. It’s by far the biggest opportunity for Northwest Indiana.

The last airline to fly out of Gary, SkyValue, suspended operations early this year.

Gary airport officials are hoping its luck will change once airport improvements are completed.
