Mosquito Population Up, But Safe For Holiday Weekend

SHARE Mosquito Population Up, But Safe For Holiday Weekend

For those of you cooking out this weekend, you may want to be sure to grab some bug spray. Illinois officials are warning the mosquito levels have reached a peak caused by last month’s flooding. Mike Szyska is with a mosquito abatement center on the North Side of Cook County. He says there’s no plans to spray, or fog, for the holiday weekend, but he says there are plans to keep fogging as needed to control the population.

SZYSKA: We get a lot of complaint calls coming in, that have been coming in over the last two weeks out there. We will fog for nuissance mosquitos and, more importantly, for the medically important Culex mosquitoes which can transmit West Nile virus.

The Illinois Department of Public Health has not had any reported cases of West Nile in humans this year.
