Chicago Mayor Richard Daley is denying a report that he privately ripped Police Superintendent Jody Weis for increased violence in the city.

While Chicago Police Superintendent Jody Weis faced questioning from aldermen at City Hall, Daley held a press conference on the far Southeast Side. The mayor took exception when reporters asked about a Chicago Sun-Times story - which said he chewed out the superintendent behind closed doors.

DALEY: People are fabricating stories now - they’re kinda make believe stories. I know the media has tough times (but) don’t make these stories unreal!

When pressed specifically if he took Weis to task for shootings outside the Taste of Chicago, Daley held firm.

DALEY: No I didn’t. I didn’t!

Daley has publicly defended Weis even as Chicago’s murder rate has gone up since he took the helm. But the mayor says he doesn’t mind angry aldermen calling the superintendent in for hearings. Daley says it’s all part of the democratic process.
