The head of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency predicts some sites will have to shut down this year. That’s because the agency’s budget was recently cut in half by Governor Rod Blagojevich. Jan Grimes is the office’s executive director.

GRIMES: The fact is that it’s a director looking at a budget that’s taken a big hit. That means I will have to take actions. And it will mean some layoffs.

Grimes says it’s too early to tell which facilities might be effected. She says increased fees and donations won’t be able to make up the difference. The governor cut the state budget earlier this month because he says Illinois could not afford the expenses.
