The Hunt is On for the Asian Longhorned Beetle...Again

SHARE The Hunt is On for the Asian Longhorned Beetle...Again

The hunt is on in Illinois for the Asian Longhorned Beetle again. Just four months ago officials celebrated exterminating the pest in Illinois. But earlier this month an alert shopper found one crawling on a car at a Deerfield strip mall. Warren Goetsch from the Illinois Department of Agriculture is organizing an inspection near the site.

GOETSCH: All we really have right now is the beetle. We don’t really know where the beetle came from.

He says it could have been imported recently or left over from the last invasion. The large black and white beetle gnaws on hardwoods like maple, elm, birch and willow. Goetsch says over 1,500 hardwood trees were cut down in and around Chicago during the last infestation.
