U of C Secretly Buying Land?

SHARE U of C Secretly Buying Land?

A Chicago alderman says the University of Chicago is secretly buying up land in her ward.

Third Ward Alderman Pat Dowell says University administrators have been lying to her, telling her they’re not buying land. She says they’ve quietly purchased properties on 55th near the Dan Ryan expressway. That area is a gateway to the campus and it’s also near the proposed site of the 2016 olympics. Dowell says school administrators won’t tell her what they plan to do with the purchased properties.

DOWELL: From my perspective their eyes are bigger than their stomach and they’re just being greedy by acquiring property and not having a plan for it.

Sonya Malunda is with the University of Chicago. She says they do have a general idea of what they want to do.

MALUNDA: We would like to see this economically distressed intersection re-developed.

Malunda says the school wants to work with Dowell, other aldermen and community members to come up with a long-term plan that benefits everyone.
