Kraft Foods Likely to Announce Layoffs

Northfield-based Kraft Foods is expected to announce hundreds of layoffs in its North American operations today.

Published reports say the job cuts cover less than one percent of Kraft’s North American workforce. And, it’s likely the cuts will be spread out geographically, according to Kraft Spokesman Mike Mitchell.

Kraft counts Nabisco snacks, Jell-O, Kool-Aid, Oreos and Velveeta cheese among its many brands. The food maker had 41,000 workers at the end of last year and 7,000 are reportedly in Canada.

The company has dealt with rising foodstuff and energy costs despite posting one of its best quarters during the second quarter.
