Twelve hundred workers at the GM plant in Janesville, Wisconsin, learned Monday that the factory will close in December. The plant is one of GM’s oldest, it makes full size SUVs, like the GMC Yukon and the Chevy Tahoe.
Chris Lee is a spokesman for the automaker.

LEE: Based on the continuing decline of sales in the full-size SUV segment, sales now and forecasted sales in the future, a difficult decision was made to move ahead to cease operations in Janesville.

The closure was expected, just not this soon.

The news comes as rumors swirl of possible mergers between US automakers. Reports say GM has been in discussion with Ford Motor Company and the owner of Chrysler.
