Two big Chicago-based law firms have announced attorney layoffs.

Katten, Muchin, Rosenman will fire 21 attorneys. Sonnenschein, Nath & Rosenthal will lay off two dozen. In an email to staff this week, Sonnenschein’s chairman blamed the cuts on problems in the financial industry.

Legal recruiter Art Gunther says lawyers at the bottom level who haven’t made partner are vulnerable.

GUNTHER: These are the associates. Associates are a not the business generators, they are the ones who bill the hours. If the hours are not there to be built there is no revenue being brought in.

Gunther expects more law firms to announce layoffs in the near future.
