Friends and fans of legendary Chicagoan Studs Terkel are remembering him this weekend. Terkel died Friday in Chicago at his home.

Listen to our conversation with Alex Kotlowitz.

Terkel was best known for documenting the hopes and struggles of ordinary Americans. Once, he interviewed the father of Chicago writer Alex Kotlowitz.

KOTLOWITZ: I learned things about my dad in that interview that I had never known before.

Kotlowitz says Terkel was genuinely interested in people. He remembers Terkel at his wedding 15 years ago.

KOTLOWITZ: We’ve got these wonderful photos, and just, you can see Studs just standing there, all these kind of people hovering around him, and I know what Studs is doing, he’s asking people questions about their lives.

A spokesperson for Terkel’s publisher says a memorial is being planned. Terkel was 96 years old.
