About 200 laid off workers at Chicago’s Republic Windows and Doors factory are still demanding their benefits. The situation drew the attention of President-elect Barack Obama.

Republic announced early last week that it would be closing its near North Side factory on Friday. With just a few days notice that they were losing jobs and benefits, workers held a sit-in over the weekend and have persisted. In response to a question at a press conference on another topic, President-elect Obama says if the company owes them, the workers should get paid.

OBAMA: When it comes to the situation here in Chicago with the workers who are asking for the benefits and payments that they have earned, I think they’re absolutely right.

Obama says the sit-in at Republic is another example of how the economy is affecting companies and forcing lay-offs.
