Illinois state lawmakers have voted nearly unanimously to impeach Governor Rod Blagojevich. Blagojevich faces federal corruption charges for selling his power as governor and allegedly trying to sell the senate seat left vacant by President elect Barack Obama.

As governor, Blagojevich has had a toxic and combative relationship with state lawmakers. Exactly one month after prosecutors unveiled the charges against Blagojevich, the Illinois state house of representatives debated his impeachment.

Democratic Representative Jack Franks was one of many who urged his colleagues to vote unanimously in favor of impeachment. F

FRANKS: It’s our duty to clean up the mess, and to stop the freak show that has become Illinois government.

The final vote was 114 in favor of impeachment—with 1 vote against impeachment cast by one representative from Chicago. Now that Blagojevich has been impeached, the matter will go to the state senate for a trial.
