The derailment of a freight train has forced Metra to cancel all service between Antioch and Chicago Friday. 5,000 commuters normally use the line.

The derailment occurred around 4 o’clock this morning. 17 cars of a Canadian National freight train derailed in Northwest Suburban Buffalo Grove on tracks also used by Metra. There were no reported injuries. Mike Gillis is a spokesperson with Metra.

GILLIS: We’re hoping that the derailment scene will be cleared by tomorrow. We do not operate trains on that line over the weekend so our hope is that by Monday morning things will be returned to normal on that line.

A spokesperson for Canadian National says its crews are working on cleaning up the site and will be there through the night, if necessary. He had no timetable for when the tracks might be used again.
