Terra Foundation Changing Focus

SHARE Terra Foundation Changing Focus
The Chicago-based Terra Foundation for American Art is largely giving up control of its museum in France.

For years, the museum’s shown American art in France. It will still show American work from time to time. But now, it’s shifting its focus to international impressionism.

Elizabeth Glassman is the Terra’s president and chief executive officer.

GLASSMAN: Strategically, does it make sense to run a stand-alone museum for American art? Or do we want to, in a sense, free ourselves from the sole obligation of running a bricks and mortar facility, and use our money as a kind of leverage?

The Terra has formed a partnership with French agencies, who will take over daily operations and funding.

Glassman says the change frees up the foundation to spend more on grants, teaching fellowships and exhibits to promote American art. The Foundation closed its Chicago museum in 2004.
