More Hoosiers Out of Work

The unemployment rate in Indiana is now double what it was just a year ago.

Indiana’s unemployment rate now stands at 8.2%, up more than a full percentage point over November and a full point over the national average. Layoffs in manufacturing, retail, construction and steel jobs are causing the number to spike all across Indiana. But the jobless rate for Northwest Indiana is especially gloomy. Lake and LaPorte counties report jobless rates above the state average.

And, in the city of East Chicago, the rate moved to near 13% in part due to a loss in casino jobs. Elkart County, just east of Gary, now has the highest rate in the state at 15.4%.

Just a year ago it was just over 4%.

The Indiana Department of Workforce Development report that 260,000 Hoosiers are now out of work.
