Mayor Daley has Two Vacant City Council Seats

Chicago Mayor Richard Daley has another vacant City Council seat to fill. That’s after Alderman Isaac Carothers resigned his post, pleading guilty to taking bribes.

Daley now has two vacant City Council seats to fill. Last month, Alderman Manny Flores left his post to head the Illinois Commerce Commission.

And yesterday, Isaac Carothers resigned after pleading guilty to taking about $40,000 in home improvements from a developer.

Jeff Steinback represents Carothers. He says the bribes were illegal, but Carothers acted in the best interest of his constituents.

STEINBACK: What was good for his ward was good for his ward, regardless of these additional benefits, which he should not have received. And that is the crime.

The plea deal calls for Carothers to serve 28 months in prison.

Before resigning, Carothers was the head of the City Council’s Police and Fire Committee. Alderman James Balcer is the committee’s vice chairman.
