Illinois U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin is calling on the Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor to step aside.

Durbin says he didn’t know Scott Lee Cohen before the election and didn’t vote for him. But he wasn’t surprised Cohen won because of the money he spent on his campaign.

DURBIN: The best thing he can do for himself, for the Democratic Party and for our state is to step aside. He is not going to be lieutenant governor. He needs to sit down with some people he trusts who understand this world of politics who will explain to him this is not the end of the story. This story will continue as long as his name is on the ballot.

Durbin says there are “a variety of ways” for the Democrats to avoid having Cohen on the party’s ticket with Governor Pat Quinn.

But he says the best way is for Cohen to agree to step aside.
