Hoosier Dems Still Searching

Republicans in Indiana are already lining up for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Evan Bayh. Hoosier Democrats, meanwhile, are scrambling to find a candidate to replace Bayh.

Dan Coats is looking for his old U.S. Senate seat back. Coats served in the Senate for 10 years before Bayh took over in 1999.

Coats will now be a candidate in the May Republican primary after securing enough signatures to qualify.

Coats says he intended to seek the senate seat even before Bayh announced yesterday he won’t run again.

A poll released last week showed Bayh beating Coats in the November election. Two other Republicans have signed on to run in the May primary. Democrats do not have a candidate.

One woman from Bloomington, Indiana expressed interest but failed to collect the necessary 4,500 signatures to qualify.

The state Democratic Party will likely select a candidate in the coming weeks.
